Among Alessi’s historical moments, there was a time, which lasted about twenty years between the ‘40s and ‘60s, in which the company, parallel to the rising production in design (the “Avio” series, the “870” shaker by Massoni, Mazzeri and Vitale) developed several lines of objects inspired by the classic styles of European silverware. Implicit in their kitsch value these items have always been loved by a certain type of public. This notion of decoration, inspired by the eighteenth-century, has been taken up again today by Alessandro Mendini with Disco Cesellato, a new project of chiseled surfaces: very simple-shaped round or oval trays and placemat were engraved with scrolls and flourishes.
